The Colors of Cordova - Harvesting Natural Dyes - Wool & Fibers

                                                Local color, Indigo, and more...

Two Day Session - Saturday/Sunday June 25, 26

This class will journey outdoors to harvest and dye with a variety of local plants in and around Cordova and discover what colors they produce. The options include windfall, common flowers, ferns and cones – the list goes on! Responsible gathering will be discussed and encouraged. In addition, we will experiment with the ancient traditional dyes such as cochineal insects, madder root, osage sawdust and walnut hulls to complete our color wheel.  On the second day, we will dip our dyed fibers into indigo and experience over-dyeing to create even more beautiful colors.  Students will receive information about common dye plants plus recipes and procedures for naturally dyeing at home and setting up and using an indigo vat.  All yarns (typically a sportweight commercial wool yarn) will be provided and are enough for a small project.

Those who are taking Mary Jane Mucklestone's Fair Isle workshops later in the week will have an opportunity to dye small skeins of fingering yarn to be used in those projects.

Please dress for outdoor activities and bring a gathering bag or bucket, garden gloves and a pair of clippers or scissors.

Natural Dyes – One Pot, Four Colors

One Day Session - Thursday June 30

Class Description:

Natural dyes are very distinctive from synthetic dyes in that nearly every shade also contains other dye colors that are waiting to bloom with the right treatment. This class will experiment with simple color modifications to create 4 harmonious shades from 1 pot.  Using the traditional natural dyes such as madder, cochineal, fustic, walnut and other historic colors, each team will create a unique palette that will be shared with the class.  So it is possible to create from 12-16  (or more!) different shades from just a handful of natural dyes.  The possibilities are thrilling and endless!

We will be working with a US-grown and spun wool, typically sportweight, and each participant will have enough yarn for a small project.  Each participant will receive recipes and samples of every color dyed in class.

Cost: $125.00   Class fee includes lunch and dyeing supplies.

Fisherman's Dags (Gloves) Shetland Style

One Day Session Tuesday June 28

Class Description:
A glove worn by the boys processing fish on the beaches before this task moved to factories. This was my uncle’s first job around 1916-18. Traditionally these are worked in a single colour, but we will include either Fair Isle patterns with a nautical connection, or gansey patterns. Hear the story of this small but very important glove for the men and boys who wore them. Hear about the life they led, the work they did and the importance of these small gloves designed specifically for the task. Beginner knitters ( using your handspun or Jamiesons spindrift) can work a one-colour glove, others can work in pattern. Students may design dags with a solid colour, strips, learn Fair Isle or they can include a gansey or any other patterning.  You do not need to be a spinner to take this class, but if you want to use your handspun, we will provide Shetland top for you to do so.
Class for both spinners and non spinners.

Prerequisite: Intermediate. Must know how to knit and purl, comfortable with double point needles.

Shetland Fleece and Fisherman's Stockings

Two Day Workshop Saturday, Sunday July 2,3

When I was in the Shetland Islands, I took a class on Shetland Fleeces and was amazed at all the wonderful qualities of the primitve Shetland breed of fleeces. Elizabeth is a wonderful instructor and I wanted to find a way to have her come and teach about these interesting fleeces. You will love this class and learning from a Shetlander about how to prepare and spin a Shetland fleece, as well as so much more from someone who makes a living handspinning and knitting in the Shetlands. A very worthwhile workshop.

In the Shetland Islands, fisherman are known for wearing sea boot socks. Underneath this outer layer, they wear another pair of socks, and these layers help keep their feet warm while at sea. Did you know that in the past our fishermen would have worn an additional layer,  a soft sock, thus wearing three pairs of socks, and each from a different quality of wool. A single Shetland fleece will provide the three grades of fleece needed for these distinct types of socks.
In this class we will grade fleece for these three distinct qualities, investigate the different preparations required  for each quality, and then spin and knit sample swatches to compare the results of these three different grades coming from a single fleece.
Length: 2 days (12 hours)
Cost: $250.00   Class fee includes lunch and fiber.

Faroe Island Fisherman Sweater
Two Day Sessions - Saturday/Sunday June 25, 26

The Faroe Islands are located in the North Atlantic Ocean north of Scotland and between Iceland and the Shetland Islands. Their windswept hills are dotted with sheep whose fleeces have been spun into yarns that have warmed fishermen for many years.  Originally solid in color, the knitters eventually introduced bands of naturally colored designs so that they could recognize their fishermen from a distance. They later added color as influenced by their neighboring Shetland Islands and Fair Isle.   The treeless cliffs and mountains are a striking landscape and backdrop to this fine knitting heritage that included the Faroese shawls in addition to the traditional Faroese fisherman garment.

This class will explore and uncover first the history of these fishermen sweaters from a land whose still main income is derived from both fishing and wool, and then go through the process of developing a garment based on the traditional Faroese Jumper template, integrating a choice of Faroese patternwork designs to create one's own Faroese inspired sweater. It will include lessons in colorwork techiques.
Homework and Supplies: TBA

Fair Isle and the Fisherman's Kep
Two Day Sessions - Saturday/Sunday July 2, 3

The Fisherman's Kep is a hat worn in the past by the Fishermen in the British Isles.  This familiar stranded knitting style may be traced to a version of color stranded knitting originating from the small North Atlantic island of Fair Isle found at first in fishermens caps worn and traded in the area, and traveled with the fishermen. Although the origins may be further traced to knitting from fishermen's caps from the Baltic Sea region, Fair Isle knitting developed into a distinct pattern style, and much stranded colorwork is  even presently referred to as Fair Isle Knitting.

Learn  the elements of Fair Isle Knitting as you study the different forms of fishermen's caps and design and create a cap based on these traditional forms.  We will have indigo and naturally dyed wools available for this workshop, and those who take Kathy Hattori's workshops will have opportunity to dye the yarn to be used in this workshop so they may incorporate their Cordova colors into the keps they create. The double version will also be explored.

Net Poetry

This class will be offered twice.

One Day Session Monday June 27  OR

One Day Session Tuesday June 27

Netting is the oldest textile technique, pre-dating weaving & knitting. Nets have long been used to capture game and fish. Mesh structures have also been used to protect, cover and separate, as in veils that partially hide, partially reveal. It is an ancient craft. Throughout the world, nets are still repaired by hand. Nets are the primary gear in Alaskan fisheries, both commercial and subsistence.

This class will hand net small “Net Poems” of waxed linen twine, approximately 11” X 9”, using traditional fishing net shuttles (mending needles). Traditional net knots will be taught, and mesh gauges will be used for uniform mesh construction. Elements (“floats”) will be strung on the top line, as corks on a traditional fishing net, and elements will be added to the bottom, like the old fashioned “sinkers”, before lead lines.

Note:
This is NOT a net mending class, and you will not be qualified to go down to the docks and contract work as a professional. These are small art nets, using ancient, traditional techniques. They can be a venue for creative expression, poetic interpretation and explorations - of how our lives are interwoven with the nets of the fishery in our community. They can be little nets to fish for and capture our dreams, or to net & display favorite objects with stories & meaning. They can be special gifts for fisher people. The skills can be used in further projects of your choice.

Length: 1 days (6 hours)
Cost: $65   Class limited to six students. Fee includes $20 materials/tools pack (bring or purchase your own buttons or treasures)
